What Is an RBT?
A Registered Behavior Technician is a paraprofessional who assists in delivering behavior-analytic services under the direction and close supervision of an RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator. RBTs work as part of a treatment team, following the applicable plan and receiving supervision for their work.
In a pediatric setting, an RBT may support a child in building skills such as:
- Communication and social interaction
- Following routines and directions
- Independence and daily living skills
- Emotional and behavioral regulation
- Play, learning, and participation in everyday activities
The work is hands-on and relationship-driven. It calls for patience, reliability, respect for each child and family, and a willingness to learn and receive feedback.
You Do Not Have to Figure Out the Process Alone
RBT certification involves several steps, and requirements can change. The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) publishes the current standards and application instructions. As of 2026, applicants should follow the 2026 requirements and verify details directly in the current BACB RBT Handbook before choosing training or submitting an application.
Your path to certification
- Check eligibility. Current requirements include being at least 18, having a high school-level education or equivalent, and completing the required criminal background and abuse registry checks.
- Complete qualifying 40-hour training. Choose a training program that meets the BACB requirements in effect when you apply. Confirm that the course and certificate meet the current 2026 standards.
- Complete the Initial Competency Assessment. After training, demonstrate the required skills with an eligible assessor. The assessment must meet current BACB timing and documentation rules.
- Submit your application. Apply through the BACB and provide the required documentation and attestations.
- Pass the examination. Once your application is approved, schedule and pass the RBT examination under the current test requirements.
Exact rules, eligible providers, forms, timing, and examination details are set by the BACB and may be updated. Seedlings does not issue RBT certification. Contact us to discuss your situation, and consult the BACB for authoritative certification guidance.

Already an RBT? Grow With Seedlings
If you are currently certified and enjoy working directly with children and families, we invite you to introduce yourself. Seedlings provides pediatric therapy and early childhood intervention services, including ABA support. Depending on current openings and family needs, qualified RBTs may be considered for opportunities that fit their location, schedule, experience, and clinical needs.
After certification, any work with Seedlings would also depend on completing applicable onboarding requirements and being matched to an appropriate opportunity. We cannot guarantee employment, a specific caseload, or client placement. RBTs provide services under qualified supervision and as part of the appropriate clinical team.
What We Value in RBT Candidates
You may be a good fit if you enjoy working with children, are dependable and compassionate, communicate respectfully with families and colleagues, and feel comfortable providing one-to-one support. We value people who are open to learning, can maintain an agreed-upon schedule, and are interested in child development, education, psychology, healthcare, or a related field.
Previous ABA experience can be helpful, but you do not need to wait until you are certified to contact us. Tell us what experience you have and what stage of the process you are considering. Current role requirements and openings vary.
From Certification to Working With Families
Certification is one part of preparing for the role. If you become certified and complete any required onboarding, potential client opportunities may be considered based on your location, availability, relevant experience, family scheduling needs, and clinical fit. These factors help determine whether an opportunity is appropriate, and availability can change. A particular caseload or placement cannot be promised.
When you reach out, you can share whether you are exploring the field, choosing a training program, completing training, preparing for assessment or examination, newly certified, or experienced and seeking a new opportunity. That context helps us understand what information may be useful in the conversation.
